Safety & Rescue Operation, Ivybridge, Devon

Following adverse weather conditions in the Ivybridge, Devon area, a mass water ingress formed within a Sibelco Europe owned quarry basin. This caused the water levels to flood the associated site facilities, including the pump house.

The levels of water reached approximately 10 metres with 5 metres being above the highest facility point.

In order to drain the flooded area the submersible pump, which was situated on a floating pontoon, needed to be activated.
Firstly each side of the platform needed to be tethered to landside fixtures, this would then allow the Electrical Engineer to position himself securely in order to connect an electrical (nonlive) cable to the control box.

The ESS Safeforce Safety & Rescue Team was present during the entire operation to provide input on risk assessment / method statement, to brief the operatives on-site and to launch a boat at quarry incline slip position for effective and safe entry into the basin.

The submersible pump was successfully activated and the operation as a whole was completed efficiently and safely.

Testimonial:

“ESS Safeforce who always provide us with quality service were extremely helpful with this task and it ticked another box in our working relationship, whilst allowing them to “Mind the Gap” as part of their internal initiative.”
Graham Jones, Engineering & Maintenance Manager, Headon Works, Sibelco Europe.
