A confined space is a place which is substantially enclosed (though
not always entirely), and where serious injury can occur from hazardous
substances or conditions within the space or nearby (e.g. lack of
oxygen).
A number of people are killed or seriously injured in the UK each
year in confined spaces. Tragically, those killed in such accidents
are not only people working in the confined spaces but those who try
to rescue them without proper training or equipment.

Some dangers can arise in Confined
Spaces due to the following:
1) A lack of oxygen.
2) Poisonous gas, fume or vapour.
3) Liquid and solids which can suddenly fill the space, or release
gases into it when disturbed.
4) Residues left in tanks, vessels etc.
5) Hot conditions leading to a dangerous increase in body temperature.
